                                                TURTLE SPECIES IN MEDITERRANEAN
Two species of sea turtles regularly nest along the Mediterranean coasts: loggerheads turtle (Caretta caretta) and green turtle (Chelonia mydas).

The main nesting concentrations of Caretta caretta in the Mediterranean are found in Greece, Turkey and Cyprus. Substantial nesting has also been discovered in Libya (Laurent et al, 1997) but the nesting effort needs to be quantified. Minor nesting sites are located in Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, Italy, Syria, Tunisia and occasionally in Spain (Margaritoulis, 2001).

Nesting of Chelonia mydas occurs mostly in the southeastern part of the basin, mainly in Turkey and Cyprus; a few nests appear in Egypt, Syria, Israel and Lebanon.

The restricted distribution of Chelonia mydas nesting grounds to the eastern Mediterranean could be due to a water temperature gradient along the coast (Groombridge, 1990) though juveniles have been found in the western and eastern Mediterranean (Lazar et al, 2004; Yalcin-Ozdelik and Aureggi, in press).
